Beauty Mystery Wonder

I believe we need a greater appreciation for beauty | mystery | wonder in the church today. Pastor and author Brian Zahnd tackles this subject in his book, “Beauty Will Save The World.”

Quoting Zahnd,

The tragedy of growing up is not that we put aside childishness, but that we lose the capacity for childlike wonder. As children we dream of finding our own real-life adventure… and we end up finding a job. Adventure is set aside for a career and wonder is the casualty… The loss of wonder is what we experience as boredom, and boredom is a real problem.

A Case For Loving The Work (That You Do)

In this fascinating NPR story “Good Art Is Popular Because It’s Good. Right?” the question is asked,

Why Is The Mona Lisa – Or Any Piece Of Art – Successful?

But is that true… Read More

The Flight Simulator Church

I remember hearing Paul Scanlon use the analogy of a flight simulator to describe what church is often like…

“The church I grew up in was great. I loved the people. We all knew each other and loved each other—and we loved God. But we were turned inward. We liked things as they were and we weren’t looking to be changed.

paul scalnon speaking

God began to speak to my heart. I couldn’t explain it but I felt this overwhelming sadness and I knew I needed to change. So I left that church, and it was painful. The people I knew all my life were upset with me for leaving. It was like I’d left an Amish community and I was being shunned or something… Read More

Problem With The Bible

This post, “My Problem With The Bible,” by Brian Zahnd is definitely worth your time. Please check it out!

brian zahnd problem with the Bible

I have a problem with the Bible. Here’s my problem…

I’m an ancient Egyptian. I’m a comfortable Babylonian. I’m a Roman in his villa.

That’s my problem. See, I’m trying to read the Bible for all it’s worth, but I’m not a Hebrew slave suffering in Egypt. I’m not a conquered Judean deported to Babylon. I’m not a first century Jew living under Roman occupation.

I’m a citizen of a superpower. I was born among the conquerors. I live in the empire. But I want to read the Bible and think it’s talking to me. This is a problem… Read More
