I Want To Be A “Drop In The Bucket” Christian

- - Uncategorized

I want to be a “drop in the bucket” Christian.

Do you know the origin of the expression “A drop in the bucket?”

It came from the Bible.

For all the nations of the world are but a drop in the bucket. —Isaiah 40.15

It means a very small, or unimportant amount…

And it seems to indicate a status of insignificance and insufficiency.

Small and not enough.

A drop in the bucket.

Ever felt like that?

Like, “Who I am and what I have to offer isn’t enough.”

Can I make a difference?

Does my attempt really even matter?

The “drop in a bucket” expression is found in another place in the Bible…

The Gospel of John describes huge crowds of people following Jesus and listening to Him teach out on the hillside near the Sea of Galilee.

Jesus was concerned that the people needed to eat.

He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread to feed these people?” He said this to stretch Philip’s faith. He already knew what he was going to do. —John 6.5, 6

Philip started making calculations. It didn’t take long for him to figure out this would be impossible. They didn’t have enough money. Philip pulls his pockets inside-out to illustrate his message to Jesus: NSF (non-sufficient funds).

Then Andrew steps forward…

Andrew said, “There’s a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But that’s a drop in the bucket for a crowd like this.” —John 6.9

And then Jesus goes to work.

You know the story. We call it “the feeding of the 5,000.”

That little boy’s lunch was offered to Jesus. It was just a drop in the bucket.

Insignificant and insufficient.

But in the hands of Jesus it became so much more.

It was incredibly significant. Everyone ate. In fact, the Bible says they ate until they were “full.”

And it was more than sufficient. Twelve baskets of leftovers were collected.

What was small and not enough becomes big and more than enough when put in the hands of Jesus.

Let’s get back to those feelings of personal insignificance and insufficiency…

Like “who I am and what I have to offer isn’t enough.”

Can I really make a difference?

Does my attempt even matter?

Yes. Yes. Yes!

Because the small and not enough becomes big and more than enough in the hands of Jesus. We don’t do the heavy lifting. Jesus does. He isn’t asking for us to save the world and carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. He does that. He is The Hero.

He’s simply wanting to stretch our faith and get us to be willing to offer up our “drop in the bucket.” I find this to be both liberating and humbling all at the same time.

It’s liberating to know that I don’t have to do the heavy lifting. The pressure is off. I’m free to be small and insignificant. It’s a relief to know that I don’t have to change the world. I just have to be willing to offer my “drop in the bucket.”

And it’s humbling too. Being a “drop in the bucket” is not applauded. The boy in the story who gave his lunch to Jesus didn’t even get his name printed. He didn’t get to take credit. Sure, he offered up his “drop in the bucket” lunch, but he didn’t perform a miracle that day.

I think we need this liberating, humbling experience…

To offer who we are and what we have.

To give our small, insignificant, weak, and insufficient whatever (talent, ability, resources, testimony, experience, finances, etc.) for Jesus to use.

I want to be a “drop in the bucket” Christian.

I Am Not Who I Will Be

- - Uncategorized

I am not who I was.

Things are different. I am different.

I’m not talking about my BC (before Christ) days compared to now.

Actually, I’m talking about my Christian life—my life in Christ…

I’m not who I was 20 years ago, I’m not who I was 10 years ago, and I’m not who I was 5 years ago.

I am being changed and I’m changing. “Being changed” refers to what God is doing in me. “Changing” refers to my willing partnership in what God is doing.

Not that I’m always willing or partnering…

I’ve got a thick head. I’m stubborn and fairly dull.

But still, God’s work is evident—and although I am slow, eventually I get it.

When I was a young follower of Jesus, I was depressed and kinda liked it. In fact, I even crafted my own little theology of depression. I would say things like, “Jesus was depressed.”

This makes me laugh today.

Why? Because God changed me. And eventually I willingly partnered with Him in this.

There are many other examples of who I used to be as a Christian—but I’m different now.

I am not who I used to be.

And I am not who I will be…

In 5 years, in 10 years, and in 20 years.

I will continue (slowly, and at times through stubborn resistance) to willingly partner with what God is doing. I will be changed and I will change.

I am not today who I will be tomorrow.

The Christian life is not a “Hold the fort,” maintain and preserve existence.

We’re always being changed and we are changing. This, my friends, is the Christian life.

If we’re not thanking Jesus for changing us recently, and we are only thanking Jesus for long-time-ago changes, something is askew.

The Gospel is the announcement of God coming to us, making all the big moves, renewing us, and giving us a brand new life. And this is perpetual. It is not a “once and then done” type of work. It is still happening, and we still need it. The Gospel is not merely the starting point of the Christian life; it is the start, the middle, and the finish. It is the whole enchilada, baby.

Get this in your spirit: “I am not who I was, and I am not who I will be.”

Be happy about it too.

Aren’t you glad you’re not who you used to be?

And don’t you want that same feeling of gratitude 5 years from now?

I am not who I will be. You are not who you will be.

Amen (let that be true).

Why You Need To Get Saved From Your Religion

- - Uncategorized

It’s pretty easy to understand why someone who appears to be making a big fat mess of their life needs to “get saved.” We naturally think, “That drug-addicted, pathologically-lying, spouse-abusing, kleptomaniac needs Jesus.”

On the other hand, if we were to ask why an upstanding, moral, law-abiding, church-going, honest, virtuous, and highly respected individual needs a new life, we would hear…

crickets

A brand new life? Why? What’s wrong with this one?

I mean, really, what does he need that he doesn’t already have?

Nicodemus was the opposite of a lying, stealing, wife-beating, druggie.

He was a good man. A really good man.

And Jesus told Nicodemus,

Unless a person is born from above, it’s not possible to see what I’m pointing to—to God’s Kingdom. (John 3.3 MSG)

Apparently Jesus wasn’t impressed with the life Nicodemus had.

Jesus, much to the shock of everyone, tells Nicodemus,

You need to get saved. You don’t even know what the Kingdom is. You’ll never see it until you are re-born—born from above, into a brand new life.

Awkward tension.

I bet it was a serious “cricket” moment.

Nicodemus had to be thinking, “But I go to church without fail. I serve. I give. I don’t have any bad habits. I follow the rules. I read the Bible. I pray…”

A brand new life? Why? What’s wrong with this one?

Maybe this helps:

Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness… “Two men went to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. The pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else. For I don’t cheat, I don’t sin, and I don’t commit adultery. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed… saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God.” (Luke 18.9-14 NLT)

Did you notice how many times the Pharisee said “I”?

That’s exactly what religion does. It focuses on the “I”.

I go to church. I serve. I give. I don’t have bad habits. I follow the rules. I read the Bible. I pray.

And “I” become the hero of my story.

Uh-oh.

We can have confidence in our side of the equation (grew up knowing God, going to church, doing the right things, reading my Bible, praying, tithing, obeying, never straying, etc.) and yet we are STILL like Nicodemus.

Nicodemus wasn’t a bad dude. He was the best of the best, a well-known and respected religious leader. And Jesus told him he needed a new life. Our side of the equation (our effort and careful observance of the rules) isn’t enough.

I like what Tim Keller says, “The Gospel is news of what God has done to reach us. It is not advice about what we must do to reach God.”

I think this is where we have new life – that place where we realize “I don’t reach God.”

God made all the moves.

He is the hero of my story, not me.

My identity isn’t about my doings any more; now my identity comes from what He has done.

Yes, the drug-addicted, pathologically lying, spouse-abusing, kleptomaniac needs to get saved. And yes, the upstanding, moral, law-abiding, church-going, honest, virtuous, and highly respected individual needs to get saved from their religion…

Their religion that keeps “I” at the center.

Their religion that forms an identity through all the things “I” do right.

The religious need a brand new life exactly as much as the big fat mess-of-a-life people do.

We all need to be saved from our selves, into a new life—one that is completely based on The Hero and His work.

*Imagine* A Brand New Life

- - Uncategorized

Imagine…

A brand new life.

Does that sound intriguing? Can you picture it?

I’m not just talking about veneer, paint, or decorative touches—used to hide what’s underneath.

No, not that.

We already know that all too well…

Black is slimming, expensive possessions distract from a deep poverty of the soul, the baseball cap nicely covers a receding hairline, bragging keeps those crippling insecurities at bay, the huge truck compensates for a short stature, churchy language keeps people impressed while diverting their attention from the filthy, ever-present stain of sin. It’s all smoke and mirrors.

And it’s not enough. There must be something more.

I think Nicodemus was probably a master of the smoke and mirrors.

He was a Pharisee, a prominent religious leader.

When he saw Jesus, Nicodemus was fascinated.

He wanted what Jesus had.

After some greetings and salutations, Jesus said something that shook Nicodemus…

Unless a person is born from above, it’s not possible to see what I’m pointing to—to God’s Kingdom. (John 3.3 MSG)

Nicodemus saw himself as a Kingdom of God type of man. He had the dress, language, and routine down. He was known. People looked up to him. He was a religious leader.

And now Jesus is telling him, “You don’t even know what the Kingdom is. You’ll never see it until you are re-born—born from above, into a brand new life.”

Oh snap.

A brand new life IS possible.

In fact, it’s exactly what God planned and designed for us.

More than band-aids, cover-ups, and veneer, God wants us to be recreated.

A new life. Born over again. Becoming a whole new, different person.

In my teen years, when I was using drugs, my bedroom was spotless—neatly organized with everything in its place. Why? To cover. It was a veneer. My hidden life was very different.

I was concerned with keeping up appearances. It made me feel better to have everything look like it was in its right place…

But my heart wasn’t.

I was good at image management, but full of death on the inside.

Better image management wasn’t the solution (though I desperately tried).

I’m so thankful for a brand new life.

No, I’m not perfect now. Far from it, actually.

I am, however, a new person. I’m free. And I see God’s Kingdom.

In God’s Kingdom, He is the Hero. It’s no longer about my image management.

Instead, it’s all about my image being found in Him—having been made new, recreated, and born-again…

Into a brand new life.

Imagine that!

That, my friends, is some straight up G, pure Gospel, Good News stuff right there.

God in the ‘Hood, That’s Straight Up G

- - Uncategorized

Central to the Gospel, the Good News message, is that God has come to us.

This is key.

We didn’t make our way to Him (that is the story of every religion—man earning or attaining something higher).

No. It’s quite the opposite.

God came to us.

He is The Hero of the story.

Christianity is not a “pick yourself up by your bootstraps and make something of yourself” philosophy or set of practices.

When we make it that, we become the hero and there is no need for The Hero.

That’s jacked-up.

Rather, Christianity is the story of our weakness, failure, and sin—being met on our home turf by the mind-blowing grace of a loving God.

Humanity became like the ghetto of a broken-down, sin-infested, violent, self-indulgent, lawless neighborhood—where any news coming out of it is always, predictably bad…

Until (The) Good News came.

The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.

—John 1.14 MSG

The “Word” who moved into the ‘hood is Jesus.

The Gospel of John tells us,

“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” (John 1.1, 4-5 NLT)

Our Hero has come.

And He brought light…

A light that shines in the darkness, and cannot be extinguished.

God in the ‘hood.

That’s straight up G.

Straight up, pure, unadulterated, beautiful Gospel.

He is present, and at work in the most unlikely of places.

Open your eyes. Take note. Be aware of The Hero—His presence and His work all around you.

Nothing is too far gone for Him—no sin too great a match for His scandalous grace.

Sin didn’t, and doesn’t, have a chance in competition with the aggressive forgiveness we call grace. When it’s sin versus grace, grace wins hands down. All sin can do is threaten us with death, and that’s the end of it. Grace, because God is putting everything together again through the Messiah, invites us into life—a life that goes on and on and on, world without end. (Romans 5.20-21 MSG)

This is the Good News, the straight up Gospel.

An Introduction to Straight Up G

- - Uncategorized

For whatever reason, the church (everywhere) has always been one big agenda magnet.

It attracts people with specific agendas…

You name it—somebody wants it.

And they’ll fight to get it.

To be honest, it annoys the snot out of me.

Sometimes the agenda is for a good and worthy cause.

Other times, the agendas are absolutely ridiculous.

Either way (good or bad), they’re always nonessential; they are superfluous and peripheral.

If we’re not careful, the agendas will take over—eclipsing the main thing.

What is the main thing?

It’s the Gospel.

And what is the Gospel?

Gospel means literally, Good News.

Quoting Tim Keller,

The Gospel is news of what God has done to reach us. It is not advice about what we must do to reach God.

The Christian Gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me.

God’s love and forgiveness can pardon and restore any and every kind of sin or wrongdoing. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done… There is no evil that the father’s love cannot pardon and cover, there is no sin that is a match for his grace.

God has entered the world in Jesus Christ to achieve a salvation that we could not achieve for ourselves which now 1) converts and transforms individuals, forming them into a new humanity, and eventually 2) will renew the whole world and all creation. This is the ‘Good News’—the Gospel.

We never “get beyond the gospel” in our Christian life to something more “advanced.” The gospel is not just the A-B-C’s but the A-Z of Christianity.

The Gospel is the big deal, the main thing.

It is essential. Without it, we do not have a church.

The church can live without various agendas (in fact, it tends to thrive in the absence of peripheral agendas).

Our job in the church is to keep the main thing the main thing.

Agendas must never become our rally-cry.

It has always been, and will always be, the Good News of the Gospel.

That’s what this new series of teaching at NWLife is all about: Straight up G.

Together, we’re gettin’ after the Gospel.

We will be digging in to the book of John—this week, chapter 1.

I hope you will join me. C’mon! Let’s be straight up G together.
