Your Super Power

- - Uncategorized

If I could choose a super power, I’d want the ability to be invisible.

How about you—what super power would you choose?

Here’s something cool…

We already have a super power!

“I want you to know about the great and mighty power that God has for us followers. It is the same wonderful power he used when he raised Christ from death.” (Ephesians 1.18, 19 CEV)

There’s a familiar Hillsong chorus that says, “The same power that conquered the grave lives in me.”

Yup, God’s limitless power lives in us…

But the truth is, it’s really His power, not ours.

We have His power living in us—and because it’s His power, it’s accomplishing His purpose.

My purpose for wanting the power of being invisible?

Because it would really help me pull off some incredible pranks.

But it’s mostly so I could see and hear things that people didn’t intend for me to see or hear.

God’s super power in us is different. It’s not there for pranks or putting us in a place of advantage over others.

God’s power in us is accomplishing His purpose.

What God wants (His purpose), He provides the power to accomplish.

He wanted Christ raised from the dead—and His power made it happen.

God wants us to be free, forgiven, holy, courageous, bold, and on-mission for Him.

And the good news is: He provides all the power needed to accomplish His purpose in our lives.

What God wants in us, He provides the power to accomplish.

That should make us smile.

By the way, I’d love to hear from you… what super power would you choose and why?

7 Symptoms Of A Blessed Life

- - Uncategorized

We are blessed with every blessing heaven has to offer because we are united with Christ (Ephesians 1.3).

The next few verses describe the symptoms of a blessed life.

Check it out:

1. We Are Loved. (vs. 4 God loved us)

2. We Are Chosen. (vs. 4 and chose us)

3. We Are Made Blameless. (vs. 4 to be holy and without fault in his eyes)

4. We Are Adopted. (vs 5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family)

5. We Are Showered With Grace. (vs. 6 grace he has poured out on us)

6. We Are Free. (vs. 7 he purchased our freedom)

7. We Are Forgiven. (vs. 7 and forgave our sins)

This list should make us smile.

Thank you God for giving us such a blessed life.

You’re Leaking

- - Uncategorized

Bring it on Donkey Kong.

I’m saying YES to a blessed life—I’m taking what He’s giving.

I want to be more and more aware of His blessings in my life, to be be “blessing-conscious.”

Maybe you know that old hymn of the church…

“Count your blessings, name them one by one, count your blessings, see what God hath done!”

The first verse of that hymn says, “When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed, when you are discouraged, thinking all is lost—count your many blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.”

That’s so good.

Let’s be more blessing-conscious and celebrate all the good things God has done in our lives.

The Bible reminds us, “Through Christ, God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing that heaven has to offer.” (Ephesians 1.3 GNT)

Snap!

Every spiritual blessing that heaven has to offer…

Are you kidding me?

That’s huge.

What God dishes out (in terms of blessings) always exceeds our capacity to contain it.

We are overflowing, dripping, leaking, oozing with the blessings of God.

So go ahead—say YES to a blessed life.

Smile, celebrate it, and don’t forget…

You’re leaking.

HERE’S A CHALLENGE:
• Be “blessing-conscious” – be on the lookout for blessings today.
• Try to discover at least one blessing you weren’t really aware of before.
• Thank God for something you haven’t already thanked him for.

What blessings are you discovering? What blessings are you thankful for today?

A Little Post About Big Things

- - Uncategorized

Fear keeps things small.

It prevents us from attempting big things.

However, the knowledge that God is for us, not against us—gives us strength and courage.

I believe God wants us to have strength for today and courage for tomorrow.

I believe He want us to fear less…

And I believe God wants us to attempt big things.

“The people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.” (Daniel 11.32b NKJV)

Great exploits = big things.

Let’s do big things!

What Are Your Go-To Thoughts?

- - Uncategorized

We all have ‘em:

Thoughts, ideas, phrases, expressions, internal dialog…

Our go-to thoughts are those ones we repeat to ourselves often.

They reveal how we see things, how we reason—how we explain what’s going on in life.

Let me share a few of mine:

• I enjoy getting older. I keep getting better… better looking, wiser, and stronger.

• Every challenge has a blessing and reward waiting for me right around the corner.

• What they’re doing (that shocks, annoys, or confuses me) somehow makes sense to them. No one intentionally tries to sabotage their own life.

• There is much beauty in life that is waiting to be discovered.

• The best is yet to come. My greatest days are before me.

• God is for me.

You probably noticed—my go-to thoughts tend to be full of peace, joy, and life.

Perhaps you’ve also noticed that some people’s go-to thoughts tend to be full of fear, doom, and gloom…

• Here we go again.

• Nobody notices me.

• Why do things always have to be so difficult?

• Things used to be so much better—back when…

• You just can’t trust anyone anymore.

The book of Daniel records Daniel praying to God out of concern for his people…

And God sends Daniel a message, repeated 3 times:

“You are greatly treasured.”

“Your God thinks highly of you.”

“You are greatly treasured. All will be well with you.”

It seems to me that God used repetition to emphasize something he wanted Daniel to know, believe, and have as his very own go-to thought…

• God treasures me, he thinks the world of me, and he’s got me covered.

I love it. In fact, I’m gonna adopt this as one of my own go-to thoughts.

So, how about you?

What are your go-to thoughts?

Please share! I’d love to hear ‘em…

Maybe I’ll adopt some of yours too!

Someone Treasures You

- - Uncategorized

Someone thinks you’re pretty amazing.

Someone can’t get enough of you.

Someone treasures you.

When Daniel was praying, God sent him a message…

“When you began making your requests, a word went out, and I’ve come to tell it to you because YOU ARE GREATLY TREASURED.” (Daniel 9.23 CEB)

“Daniel, YOUR GOD THINKS HIGHLY OF YOU, and he has sent me. So stand up and pay close attention. Don’t be afraid, Daniel, because… your words were heard. I’ve come because of your words!” (Daniel 10.11, 12 CEB)

“Don’t be afraid. YOU ARE GREATLY TREASURED. All will be well with you. Be strong!” (Daniel 10.18 CEB)

I believe God wants you (just like Daniel) to receive a message today:

You are greatly treasured.

Your God thinks highly of you.

Don’t be afraid. All will be well with you. Be strong!

You are greatly treasured.

I Had. A Bad. Experience.

- - Uncategorized

“I had. A bad. Experience.”

Remember this line from The Italian Job?

It was Left Ear talking to Charlie Croker, explaining why he doesn’t like dogs.

I love that line. It made me laugh.

And I can relate. Not that I feel that way about dogs—but other things…

I had. A bad. Experience.

Another way to say it: I have issues.

The Bible has something to say about issues:

“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4.23 NKJV)

We CAN’T always determine the conditions or circumstances of life. Things happen, ya know?

We CAN guard our heart—so that it’s not full of issues that control our lives.

You Are Not Alone

- - Uncategorized

When you’re going through it…

Just remember: you’re not alone.

Sure, there are others who are going through the fire too…

But Someone is there WITH YOU and FOR YOU. You are not alone.

When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into the fiery furnace, the king watched.

Suddenly, Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in amazement and exclaimed to his advisers, “Didn’t we tie up three men and throw them into the furnace?”

“Yes, your majesty, we certainly did,” they replied.

“Look!” Nebuchadnezzar shouted. “I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed! And the fourth looks like a god!” (Daniel 3.24, 25 NLT)

There is no place you can go that God won’t—to be WITH YOU and FOR YOU.

David knew this. That’s why he said, “I can never get away from your presence!” (Psalm 139.7 NLT)

You are not alone.

Even in the darkest, most difficult and painful of places…

“Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.” (Psalm 23.4 NLT)

He is there—WITH YOU and FOR YOU.

You are not alone.

Unbound & Unharmed

- - Uncategorized

Have you ever found yourself in the fire?

Maybe you’re in one now—experiencing great pain and difficulty with no sign of escape.

When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were put into the fiery furnace, it was so hot, the soldiers who threw them in died.

That’s one bad fire…

Yet, God did not abandon Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

Although they found themselves in the fire, God was there with them.

The king and the others who were present to witness the execution saw something completely unexpected…

They were “unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed!” (Daniel 3.25 NLT)

Unbound and unharmed.

Walking around in the fire.

I’ve been in the fire before and it wouldn’t surprise me if I found myself in the fire again.

My prayer is that when I’m in the fire, I will be seen walking around—unbound and unharmed.

“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH THE FIRE of oppression, YOU WILL NOT BE BURNED UP; THE FLAMES WILL NOT CONSUME YOU. For I am the Lord your God.” (Isaiah 43.1-3 NLT)

Johnny Still Smelled Like Raw Bacon

- - Uncategorized

When I was 9 or 10, I participated in Royal Rangers (a church-based Boy Scouts type thing).

They taught us how to tie knots and light fires and use knives.

One thing excluded in the curriculum—a class on explosives. That was probably for the best.

True story: One of our Royal Ranger Commanders was missing a hand and had a metal claw in its place.

He left a vivid impression on our young minds as he taught knife safety.

Occasionally we would have Royal Ranger camp-outs.

After two or three days of non-stop camp fires and no bathrooms or showers, we’d come home stinking.

My mom would always complain about it—one bath couldn’t get the smell of smoke out of my skin.

On one particular camp-out, my friend Johnny brought a pound of bacon.

That seemed like a lot for one kid.

Johnny pulled the package out of his backpack and asked us if we’d ever tried raw bacon.

My face did a “Mr Yuk” and I said, “Ewww. Nasty. You’re not supposed to do that. It will give you worms or something.”

I thought Johnny was just bluffing. He wasn’t. He opened the package, pulled off a piece of bacon, and ate it.

By the end of that day, Johnny had eaten the entire pound of bacon. Raw.

On our camp-out, we all stunk like campfire smoke…

But Johnny smelled even stronger—like bacon.

A week later, I saw Johnny at church. I wondered if he still smelled like bacon.

I grabbed his hand, held it up to my nose… and sure enough, he did. Johnny still smelled like raw bacon.

Whenever I think of those camp-outs and Johnny’s thing for raw bacon, it amazes me that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego made it out of the fiery furnace like this…

“Not a hair on their heads was singed, and their clothing was not scorched—they didn’t even smell of smoke!” (Daniel 3.27 NLT)

Incredible.

Every one of those things happened to me on a Royal Ranger camp-out!

My hair—singed. My clothing—scorched. And I reeked like smoke for days.

Yet these three young men made it through a profoundly difficult, painful, scary experience… without being scarred, scorched, or even smelling like it.

I think how they went into the flames was significant to how they came out of the flames.

Just before going into the fiery furnace, they said…

“The GOD whom we serve IS ABLE to save us. He will rescue us from your power. But EVEN IF HE DOESN’T, we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue…” (Daniel 3.17 18)

This is huge.

They went into the flames saying, “Our God is able to get us out of this—but even if he doesn’t, we’re good.”

I love this.

They trusted God and they didn’t box God in. They were OK letting God be God.

They hoped for a good outcome, but were willing to accept whatever God would do.

This, in my opinion, is key for us today—if we’re going to make it through the difficult, the painful, and the scary without being scarred, scorched, or even smelling like it.

I want to be like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

I want to say confidently, “My God is able to get me out of this—but even if he doesn’t, I’m good.”

I’ve smelled like campfires before.

My friend Johnny smelled like raw bacon for at least a week…

And I’ve known many people who smell like resentment, bitterness, hurt, and anger for decades because of what they’ve been through.

It’s sad.

They’re not in the fire anymore, but they still smell like it.

It doesn’t have to be that way. The truth is, we will all go through some fires…

But how we go into the flames is significant to how we come out of those flames.

Next time you’re feeling the fire, say:

God, you’re able to get me out of this—but even if you don’t, I’m good.

I trust You and I’m not gonna box You in.

I’m OK letting You be God.

I’m hoping for a good outcome, but I’m willing to accept whatever You do.
