Two Very Different Conversations in the Church Lobby

On the same Sunday several months ago, I had two very different conversations in the church lobby…

1. Met a new guy who, after shaking hands, immediately started in with rapid-fire questions: “You believe in the 1611 KJV only Bible, right? What kind of music do you have? I believe only the piano should be played in church. Also, Catholics are of the devil (as he gestured toward St. Stephens Church across the street), you agree, right?”

2. A young Nigerian woman who attends the church asked me, “I wondered if you could help me with something… are there widows in our church? Because I want to take meals and visit with them.”

One conversation was ugly, the other was beautiful.

  1. Hi, just a note on the whole “Catholic thing”–I have surprised many people when I told them I came into the beginning with my relationship with Jesus, became a Christian in Protestant terms, while Catholic, and how the foundations of the Scripture I heard every Sunday helped lead me there. I have also surprised many when I tell them the members of my family who are still practicing Catholics (one who has her Masters in Theology and teaches at a Catholic seminary) are also believing Christians. We will all probably be surprised at some of those we see around the Throne at the end of all things. It was probably a good thing I didn’t have a chance to talk to that guy; there may not have been much grace in my answer.
As far as our sister goes, may I learn to be more sensitive to those around me and their struggles, and know how to bring support.
